Something about the brain fascinates me. I mean, it's almost comical to think that my brain wants to know more abut my brain. Brain-ception. Anyway, I've done a fair deal of research regarding the effects of music on the brain and wanted to share with you guys a few articles/websites that are absolutely gripping! The first is a time magazine article briefly discussing the effects of music on the brain that provides lots of great facts and statistics you all can use as ammunition when someone tells you music is not important. The latter is most definitely geared toward our age - this is meant as a "disclaimer" of sorts. Some inappropriate language may appear, so beware. Although, given that you've made it to college, I'm sure you've heard those words once or twice. The important thing is the content - take some time, if you have it, to arm yourself with this information, it may come in handy one day. I know it has for me. Ciao.
Anyone who enjoys this subject would appreciate a book called "This is Your Brain on Music" by Daniel Levitin. This book presents music through a cognitive psychological perspective. The author explains the neurological processes of music without sacrificing the humanistic aspects of what makes music important to us.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely an interesting concept... I'm looking forward to reading these articles.
That book is phenomenal. READ IT!
DeleteBoth articles were very interesting. I personally enjoy the Cracked articles because they add such humor to whatever it is they are writing about. I liked #3: Return Lost Memories, the most because it is one of my favorite experiences to go through. I would have my iTunes library on shuffle while doing a homework assignment and then one song would come on and it would bring back memories that that certain song was involved with. For instance, yesterday, I was doing my theory assignment when "Night On Bald Mountain" started to creep its way into my ears. It immediately brought memories not only from my childhood: watching Fantasia (which is one of my favorite films) with my little brother, but also brought memories back from my senior year. Each year, at my prep school, we have a Halloween Collage Concert and "Night On Bald Mountain" was one of the pieces our symphonic band had performed. Not only that, but this was the first piece that I had ever conducted. It was a delightful deja vu moment for sure. Its simply amazing what music can do for people.
